Observing Textile Waste Across Two Contrasting Systems

Learning across textile systems in both Canada and India has revealed something important: waste is not just a material outcome, it is a reflection of how each system is designed to handle value over time.

While the two countries operate in very different economic, cultural, and infrastructural contexts, certain patterns begin to emerge when you observe textiles beyond their point of disposal. These early observations are not conclusions but signals of how materials flow differently, lose value, or remain in circulation.

Different Systems, Shared Structural Gaps

The most striking realization is not that the systems are different—but that both systems are incomplete in different ways.

One system is highly structured but struggles with keeping textiles in circulation meaningfully.

The other has strong informal circularity but lacks formal recognition and integration.

This contrast highlights an important truth:

Waste systems are shaped as much by culture and behaviour as they are by infrastructure.

System Observations

1. Collection Systems

In Canada, textile collection is largely structured through donation bins, thrift networks, and formal programs.

In India, collection is more decentralized, relying heavily on informal recovery chains involving collectors, traders, and small-scale businesses.

2. Culture of Reuse

In Canada, reuse is primarily mediated through thrift stores and second-hand retail channels.

In India, reuse is embedded in daily life through repair, alteration, and the continuous circulation of garments within households and communities.

3. Value Retention in Textiles

In Canada, garments tend to lose perceived value quickly due to high consumption rates and fast fashion cycles.

In India, textiles often retain utility for longer periods, moving through multiple stages of use before disposal.

4. Repair Ecosystem

Canada has emerging repair services, but repair is still not a default behaviour for most consumers.

India has a widespread informal tailoring ecosystem that naturally extends garment lifespans through alterations and repairs.

5. Visibility of Waste Systems

In Canada, textile waste flows are more documented and regulated.

In India, a large portion of recovery work is carried out by informal actors whose contribution is significant but often underrepresented in formal systems.

6. Recycling Challenges

Both contexts face limitations in recycling infrastructure, particularly for blended textiles.

Canada’s challenge lies in scaling viable recycling pathways.

India’s challenge includes managing smaller, fragmented waste streams such as tailoring offcuts and production scraps.

Emerging Reflection

Across both contexts, one question continues to surface:

How do we design systems that intervene earlier in the lifecycle of textiles, rather than managing failure at the end?

This question is beginning to shape the early direction of RenWeSort - not as a solution, but as a system experiment focused on improving what happens before waste is created.
